Excerpt Wednesday – The Black Heart

Carter Rogers sat at his kitchen table sipping a cup of coffee. He watched as a gentle breeze softly moved the curtains on the open window. It was an unusually warm evening for early May, but not warm enough to need air conditioning. He loved nights like this with the fresh air coming through the windows. He breathed deeply and then pushed back his chair and stood. He was setting his coffee cup in the dishwasher when an explosion sounded in the distance. The force was strong enough to rattle the dishes in the cupboard. Almost immediately, sirens could be heard in the distance.

Carter turned to his wife Morgan who was wiping down the counter. "I wonder what that was."

"Probably just some kids setting off firecrackers," Morgan replied with a slight shrug. She glanced at her wristwatch. It read exactly nine o'clock.

He shook his head. "I don't think so. Something's exploded," he said. "Don't you hear the sirens?"

She cocked an eyebrow. "I'm sure it's nothing serious." She smiled. "Would you like to watch TV or go to a movie? There's a new mystery I've been wanting to see. It doesn't start until ten. We could get a sitter," she said hopefully.

"Morgan, I'm too tired tonight. Besides, I doubt we'd find a sitter this late. Anyway, I don't like to do things on the spur of the moment. You know that."

She frowned. "I'm sorry. I just thought that maybe for once in your life you might want to do something spontaneous instead of mapping your life out minute by minute. Next time I'll ask you a month in advance so you can pencil it into your schedule."

Carter laughed at her sarcasm. "I'm sorry, honey." He came up behind her and put his arms around her slim waist. "We'll do something special tomorrow night. I promise. I already have it penciled in."

Morgan turned around facing him. "I suppose I'll let you off the hook. But no excuses tomorrow night. I'll line up a sitter."

"I'll even spring for dinner first. We'll make a night of it."

"I'm looking forward to it." She brushed his sandy brown hair from his brow. "Looks like you need a trim."

"I think I'll let it grow out a little."

Morgan began to reply, but the phone rang interrupting her.

"I'll get it," Carter said.

Morgan finished straightening the kitchen, tuning out her husband's phone conversation. She had other things on her mind to mull over. She jumped when Carter placed a heavy hand on her shoulder. "What's the matter, Carter?" He was ashen-faced and trembling.

Excerpt Wednesday – Twisted Lives

Daniel quickly got to his feet. "Stay here for a minute. I'll be right back." He hurried to Lt. Jackson's office. Ben was coming around the corner.

"Slow down, Daniel. What's up?" Ben asked.

"I've got to talk to the lieutenant. The same man who we suspect of being our serial killer employs Randy Kane. He could be the next victim." He rapped on the door, and then opened it without waiting for consent. Ben followed him inside.

Lieutenant Jackson sat behind a large desk and looked up as they entered.

"We need protection for Randy Kane. He works for this guy," Daniel explained, stabbing a finger at the composite sitting on top of a stack of files on the cluttered desk. "The same man we believe is responsible for his brother's death."

Lt. Jackson leaned back in his chair and pulled at his chin. "I agree, but we need to locate him first."

"What do you mean?" Daniel asked.

The older man's eyes narrowed. "Bill Kane just called and said he and his wife still haven't seen or heard from Randy."

"Maybe he found out about his brother and took off to be alone," Ben offered.

"No, I don't buy it. I think he would have gone home for Sara's sake," Daniel said.
"The three kids are very close, and the boys very protective of their sister."

Lt. Jackson eyed the detectives. "I want you two to track him down." He glanced at the composite. "I just hope it's not too late."

Excerpt Wednesday - The Adventures Of Angel – Angel's New Sister

"Angel, the baby is going to be a part of our family, whether you want her to be or not. That's not going to change. I need you to help me get the nest ready." She patted Angel's head. "You'll always be my special girl."

Angel crinkled up her nose. "Can I go play with my friends now, Mommy?"

"Yes, but make sure you're back in time for supper."

Angel hurriedly hopped out of the garden. She scurried over to the flower garden, seeing Butterfly sitting on top of a sunflower. "Hi, Butterfly." She waved.

Butterfly flew over to her and landed in front of her. "I was waiting for you, Angel. What do you want to do today?"

Angel shrugged. "I don't know." She sat down and put her face in her hands.

"Don't you feel well, Angel?" Butterfly asked worriedly.

"I feel fine, Butterfly."

"What's the matter then?" She tipped a wing in Angel's direction. "You look so sad."

Angel frowned. "Mommy's having a baby."

Excerpt Wednesday - The Adventures Of Angel – Angel's Glasses

Butterfly tapped Angel's head. "You're it, Angel."

Angel looked around as everyone scattered. She hopped and ran as fast as she could to catch Danny. She reached out to tag him, but he ran as fast as a walrus could out of her reach.

Danny smiled. Usually he was tagged right away, but today was different. He wondered if he was getting faster.

Angel suddenly stopped, then rubbed her eyes. She squinted as Danny hurried away.

"What's the matter, Angel?" Butterfly asked worriedly. "Why didn't you tag Danny?"

"My eyes are blurry again," she said as she looked at the others coming toward her. She blinked a few times, but they were still blurry.

Excerpt Wednesday - The Adventures Of Angel – A Secret For Angel

Lou frowned. "We can't tell you what the secret is, Angel."

"Oh, please tell me, Lou," she begged.

"We can't, or it wouldn't be a secret."

"Does everybody else know what the secret is?" Angel asked.

Lou nodded.

"Well, then tell me and we'll all know."

"We would if we could, but we can't," Piddy said, looking at the others.

"Do Herman, Leo, Bugg and Butterfly know the secret?"

"Yes, Angel, we all know the secret," Danny answered.

She wiggled her nose. "Doesn't anyone want me to know the secret?"

"Growl. We have to go now, Angel. We'll see you later."

Tears filled her eyes. "Okay, then. Goodbye, everyone," she said sadly as she slowly hopped away.
