Farrel struggled to hold back her tears. Why couldn’t her husband be this gentle all of the time? This same scene played out over and over after his abuse. She had it memorized. Robert would act as though nothing had happened, and even express surprise at her bruises and deny responsibility for her injuries. His excuse would be that she happened to be in his way and stumbled, or that she was imagining the abuse and then feign shock that she could ever think he would hurt her. Robert even offered to help her find a counselor for the mental and emotional problems he insisted she had. Sometimes she wondered if she was losing her mind. Her daughters witnessed many of his attacks, but his answer was always the same. They were lying about him because they hated him and wanted to make him look like a monster to the world. Farrel knew that somewhere within himself, he knew his guilt. He had to.

Excerpt Wednesday - All I Want Is You

Rachel’s eyes clouded. She couldn’t tell her friend that Caleb had stirred something in her, something she’d never felt before. She had to brush those feelings aside. "I know what you’re trying to do, Kate. I told you last night that I’m perfectly happy with my life just the way it is. I don’t have the time or energy to focus on a relationship. My job and Ethan are about all I can handle right now."

Kate lifted a suspicious eyebrow. "What do you think I’m trying to do, Rachel?"

Rachel pursed her lips. "You’re trying to set me up with Caleb. Admit it, Kate. I can see right through it."

Kate held up a hand. "I swear I’m not, but you have to admit he’s not only gorgeous, but nice. You said so yourself, and Ethan likes him." She drew a deep breath. "Okay, I admit it. I thought if you two met each other you might be able to help one another. You’re both too young to shut yourselves away from the world. You already have something in common."

"I know your intentions are good, but did it ever occur to you that some people never get over their grief?"

"It has, and I personally don’t think it’s healthy." She shrugged. "You have to admit, he’s gorgeous."

"Okay, I admit he’s good looking, kind, and Ethan is enjoying his company." She sighed heavily. "If things were different—"

"Just what does that mean, Rachel?" Kate demanded, cutting her off.

Robert walked to the table, pulled out a chair, and sat down across from her. "So, what do you write about, anyway?"

Farrel set her pen down. "You’ve never seemed interested before," she said, surprised.

"I didn’t say I was interested. Just curious."

She sighed. Why did he have to try to ruin everything that meant something to her? She wanted so much to be able to have the kind of normal relationship where they could share their individual passions with one another. She looked at him. He was dressed in an old paint stained shirt and faded jeans. His feet were bare. His attire was unusual, but she didn’t dare question it. "Mostly, I write about my feelings. Sometimes what I’m feeling pours out on paper and releases all of my frustrations. The difference is that I can control my characters so they can have the most wonderful lives with all of their dreams fulfilled."

Robert’s eyes narrowed. "Are you saying that your life isn’t satisfying to you?"

Farrel noticed the disapproval in his eyes as he swept over her makeup-less face and uncombed hair. Self-consciously she swept a strand of hair from her brow as she pondered his question. "No, I don’t mean to imply that. It’s just that everyone always wishes certain aspects of their lives were different. In my writing, I can fulfill all of my dreams through my characters’ actions and emotions."

Excerpt Wednesday - All I Want Is You

Looking at this handsome stranger brought to the surface long dormant feelings, which caused her heart to flutter as she glanced into his beautiful kind eyes. That was all it took, a glance. The unaccustomed emotion stunned her for a few seconds, and she quickly shook it off, hoping the others hadn’t noticed even though she felt the heat rise to her cheeks.

She smiled faintly and nodded. "If you’d like, Caleb," she answered softly. "I’d love to have you join us."

"Thank you. I would like to join you," he replied. "I haven’t gone looking for a Christmas tree in a long time, not since..." His voice trailed off.

Tom slapped Caleb on the back and said quickly, "Good. I can use the help loading the tree."

Rachel witnessed the sorrow in Caleb’s eyes, which left as quickly as it had come. She felt a pang of sadness for him, remembering what Kate had said about the sudden death of his wife. Holidays must be extremely difficult for him. She couldn’t imagine what pain he was experiencing and prayed she’d never have to. She hoped Caleb could find some joy in sharing the rest of the day with them. He’d certainly given the children joy today in his role as Santa, and she assumed he received even more in return, watching the children’s excited faces. Hopefully that helped to ease some of his pain.

Brianna watched as he took another deep breath then straightened his shoulders.

"But life goes on and I knew Sabrina would want me to go on living instead of spending my life mourning her. She was a sweet, gentle giving woman who always saw the best in everyone she met. It was so unfair that someone as loving as she was should be so tragically taken. I was angry for so long at the injustice of her death that even my friends were beginning to worry about me so one day, I just made the decision to leave."

"I can’t imagine your pain," Bri said feebly wishing she could think of something—anything to take his haunting hurt away.

"After awhile I began to focus on the good times we shared and that helped. Now that dull empty feeling inside is replaced with hope." He turned to her his mood lifting.

She saw the muscles in his face relax and a bright twinkling come back into his eyes. "Maybe tonight is a sign."

Robert stared at the ceiling. He took a deep breath and held it for a few seconds before exhaling. Farrel lay silently next to him. He was tense, and she knew a battle was raging within him to keep his temper in check. She was so tired—not physically, but mentally. She couldn’t take much more and realized that at any moment she would snap, and that would be the end. Her nerves were a twisted, mangled mass of frustrations, but she still clung to one hope. The hope that the marriage counselor would shed some light on how she could help her husband to help himself and how they could hopefully work together to become a normal family. Still, a major part of her recognized that she shouldn’t get her hopes too high. Every time she did, Robert pulled the rug out from under her. This time she wouldn’t allow it.

Kate’s eyes brightened. "How nice! Caleb usually hangs around the fire station. Tom and I would certainly have him over if we didn’t go out of town to visit relatives for the holidays every year, but even if we were home, I doubt he’d come. I know most of the firefighters at the station extend invitations to him, but he never accepts. This will be a real treat for him." She grinned.

"Who knows? You two might discover you are more compatible than you think. Something that extends beyond just a good friend." Kate nodded approvingly. "He wouldn’t have accepted your invitation if he wasn’t interested in you."

Rachel held up a hand. "Stop, Kate. He’s not coming for Christmas."

Kate’s face fell. "He refused?"

She sighed. "Not exactly. After Ethan invited him, I told Ethan he might have to work on Christmas."

She shivered as she picked up a pair of silk stockings and dreamily rubbed them against her cheek, and then smiled. She craved pure raw, uncontrollable sex with no holds barred. She wanted to be taken to the edge and back again. She’d never dared to share these innermost fantasies with anyone, so they had stayed inside clawing to be set free.

Now was the time to let down the barriers and be the woman she was meant to be, the woman who would give her partner as much or even more in return.

Harvey had been a good husband and provider. He gave her and their sons, Jeremy and Scott, a life of ease and luxury that not many of her poor background had or ever would have. And Annabel had loved him. Despite their sexual problems, Harvey had been her rock. He had been her best friend since the moment they’d met and she still felt that way, right up until the moment of his death. She missed his friendship and camaraderie.

"It’s about time that you took some time off," Annabel said. "You work much too hard," she gently scolded. "I worry about you, Em. Why do you do it? You certainly don't need the money."

Emily threw her head back and laughed. "Believe me, there have been times I’ve asked myself the same question." She grew serious. "What would I do if I didn’t write? That’s all I’ve ever done or ever wanted to do. I don’t know how I’d fill all those empty hours."

"Well, I for one can think of many more pleasurable pursuits," Josephine interjected. "Such as physical pursuits."

Annabel chuckled. "You’re wicked, Jo. I swear you have a one track mind."

"It keeps me happy and satisfied." She pointed a slender finger in Emily’s direction. "It might do you good to have an old-fashioned roll in the hay."
