Excerpt Wednesday – The Stalker

 Jeremy sat on the bus, staring blankly out of the window. He heard the familiar echoes and tightly closed his eyes for a few seconds. 

You almost blew everything! they shouted. 

But I didn’t, his mind screamed back at them. He popped his eyes back open, then cautiously looked at the other passengers. No one made eye contact with him. They were involved in their own private thoughts. He settled back in his seat as the bus stopped and passengers got off and new ones got on. 

It’s a good thing we were there to help you keep your cool. Forget Rebecca. She’ll never be your girlfriend, they hissed. 

Yes, she is! his mind shouted, repeatedly trying to drown out their screeching, hissing voices. He’d concentrate on Rebecca. Thoughts of her brought a smile to his lips. He couldn’t wait to see her again. As he willed himself to focus just on her, he chased the demons to the far corners of his mind.

 He watched from the window, the same streaked window he stood in front of every morning. He’d been watching her for ten long years. He licked his lips in anticipation, and his heart thudded irregularly in his chest just like it did every time he knew he would be seeing her. He moved the curtain slightly to get a better view. She was coming, and his heart raced. She bounded out of her door, hands tightly gripping those of her ruddy-cheeked, carrot-topped twin boys. He wished he could hear what she was saying, just as he wished it were he whom she was smiling at and talking to. The children continued looking at her, laughter in their bright eyes as their cherub faces smiled while she talked. 

How he longed to hear her voice speaking to him again, but it was only etched in his memory forever. He watched as her boys scurried onto their school bus. She smiled and waved even long after the bus was out of view. How he ached for her all these seemingly endless, lonely years. Being apart from her angered him and brought the demons closer to the surface, forcing him to lurk even further in the shadows. The shadows were his only solace, where he could watch her with no one telling him it was wrong or that he was a freak. Time was passing quickly, much too quickly. He had to make a move. It was time to come out of the shadows and finally claim her for his own.

Luke threw an arm around Cassi. Jeremy watched as his fingers softly massaged her bare shoulder. He stole a look at Rebecca wishing he were rubbing her shoulder as her head rested on his chest. 

Nicholas sat down next to Rebecca and carefully put an arm across her shoulder, drawing her close to him. She rested her head on his chest, then ran her fingertips up and down his arm. 

No! he silently screamed. No, I’m supposed to be the one holding her and touching her. The demons ridiculed him. We warned you, she doesn’t want you, they laughed. He gulped down the rest of his beer, forgetting about the bitter taste. He had to quell the rumbling erupting inside of him.

Jeremy placed his hands over his ears, but the voices only grew louder. "Shut up!" he demanded. "Just shut the fuck up!" He squeezed his eyes shut as his mind became saturated with thoughts and images of Rebecca. The demons felt threatened, but they confused him repeatedly—one minute telling him to stand up for himself, and then taunting him when he did. He couldn't trust them most of the time, but he knew they'd never leave and it was useless to plead with them for release. They embedded themselves in his thought processes, sometimes doing things and then blaming him for it. They were as much a part of him as his legs and arms were. The few weeks of peace he'd had from them had given him false hope, and he felt a peacefulness he wasn't accustomed to. Now they were back and in full swing, stronger than before. He had to keep his guard up and watch them while trying in desperation to hide his real thoughts about Rebecca. She'll hurt you worse than Julie Howard ever did, they warned.

"Leave me alone! She's nothing like Julie." He pulled on a pair of jeans, his fingers trembling on the zipper. He felt the familiar bulge beginning to grow, but there was no time. He pulled on a pale blue T-shirt with the college logo emblazoned across the front of it, then grabbed his sneakers and slid his feet into them, tying them tightly. He studied his reflection in his bureau mirror and ran a comb through his tangled hair.

She started to back away from his desk, but he clamped his icy fingers around her wrist. "Let go of me," she cried. He loosened his grip but wouldn't completely relinquish his hold on her. "Jeremy, I am not your girlfriend. You've conjured something up in your head that's not real."

"Excuse me?" His eyes flashed.

"Those letters were almost pornographic."

"Those letters spoke the truth."

"No," she said hoarsely. "They were sick and demented. I wouldn't do those things with anyone!"

He laughed. "No, I know what you really want. Girls always want the same thing. I was being romantic by telling you how I would fulfill every desire and fantasy you possess."

Her eyes widened. "My God, Jeremy, that's not romance."

He grinned. "I guess you've never dated a real man before. I only want you to know what to expect our first time."

She yanked her wrist free. "There's never going to be a first time! I was only friendly with you because I felt sorry for you, but I don't anymore," she said. "Stay away from me, Jeremy Talbot!"

He watched as students slowly began filing into the room. "Never, Julie, you're my girl," he whispered.

She was trembling as she took her seat, his words sticking in her mind.
